Seed-the source of life. And woman holds the seed with the hope of new life. Instead of producing diverse seed from homestead agriculture, women are engaged traditionally to select seed, drying, preserving, protecting during storage, saving them from any economical crisis of the family. To ensure the seed quality and the perfect storage place & methods, women hold the vast knowledge. They decide the quantity and variety of seed to be saved and the method of preservation. Seed selection by women is a continuous activity. Working in the fields, they observe the plants and decide which seeds to select. They identify plants of good quality on the basis of size, grain formation and their resistance to pests and insects. Here a woman looks at the seed... |

There is an increasing market for organic agriculture (Golijan & Popovi\vs, 2016). However, the lack of attention for biodiversity and soil fertility of current practices is a pressing issue. The SUREVEG project (CORE Organic Cofund, 2018) therefore looks at strip-cropping in organic production and its implementation in intensive farming to improve soil fertility and biodiversity throughout Europe. The aim is to enhance resilience (Wojtkowski, 2008), system sustainability, local nutrient recycling, and soil carbon storage (Wang, Li & Alva, 2010) among others. To counteract the additional labour of a multi-crop system, a robotic tool is proposed, which will operate upside down suspended from a wide-span mobile carriage. Within the project framework,... |

Organic agriculture is developing at a slower rate in Iceland than in the other Nordic countries, partly due to lack of research and development work. While the supply of organics does not meet demand, and the market is growing, this sector within Icelandic agriculture is largely driven by consumers, ideologists and enthusiasts. They are, for example, trying to solve problems and promote progress by accumulating and disseminating knowledge from various sources. Much more support is needed from the scientific community and politicians should pay closer attention to the contribution organic farming can make to sustainable development and the wellbeing of society at large. Transfer of knowledge from other Nordic countries could, for example, be linked to... |

By heating up carbohydrate-rich food, like cereals and potatoes, Acrylamide (AA), a probably carcinogen food ingredient, will be created due to a reaction of free Asparagine (Asn) and reducing sugar within the Maillard-Reaction. Up to now two opportunities to decrease AA are discussed. Firstly by changing technological food processing steps e.g. receipt modifications and secondly by plant production e.g. finding species and cultivars low in the content of precursors of AA. For cereals, free Asn is the limiting factor for formation of AA. By investigations of conventionally produced wheat-, spelt- and rye samples differences were found in the amount of Asn both in species and cultivars. It was assumed that these differences could also be found in... |

The EU has put innovation at the heart of its strategy for achieving smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. In comparison with earlier EU research policy, the focus has shifted from research for its own sake to innovation with tangible impact. Putting ideas into practice has become the central goal of Horizon 2020, the EU's Framework Programme for Research & Innovation for 2014-2020. This evolution also affects Europe's food and farming sector. Innovation support will be strengthened in the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Among the different measures that are foreseen in the CAP for 2014-2020 is the creation of a European Innovation Partnership for Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability (EIP) that should close the gap between research... |

Sixty-seven organic producers were among 189 dairy farmers completing the “Healthy Feet Project” in the UK. This aimed to reduce lameness in dairy herds by implementing existing knowledge. Participants received input at two levels: monitoring alone, or monitoring with extra support through a single veterinary advisory visit, annual visits from a trained non-veterinary facilitator and materials and contacts to encourage change. On average lameness on organic farms reduced by 12 percentage points over the three year period. On the farms achieving the greatest reduction, the most common changes were improvements to tracks and cubicle comfort, and more frequent footbathing or foot trimming. Practices to improve foot cleanliness, such as more frequent removal of... |

Crop rotation is an essential basis of an organic farming system. An activity theoretical concept of object shall be used in examining planning processes of crop rotations. Farmers' object construction means their creating and maintaining the social meaning and purpose of the material farming activity. I shall assume the farmers´ object construction in planning crop rotations to reflect their overall object in organic vegetable farming. First, this paper examines theoretically the object in organic vegetable farming by devising a framework of different types of object constructions. Second, two farms with organic vegetable production will be described, and the farmers´ objects will be shown in the light of the histories of the farms. This will show... |

Lupin as a grain crop has been restricted in growing area to more continental conditions due to their indeterminate growth form, which in maritime Northern European areas causes excessive vegetative development, late and uneven ripening and lodging. However, new reduced branching types provides better possibilities for adaptation to these conditions, and preliminary results indicates potential seed yields up to 5-6 tons per ha in the narrowed leafed lupins (Lupinus angustifolius) and an acceptable stable and early ripening. Due to full susceptibility to anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides) in white (L. albus) and yellow (L. luteus) their introduction in these environments is doubtful. In these growing areas Botrytis (Botrytis cinerea) and fusarium... |

In the analysis, we will - identify the most significant changes over time in relevant market, regulatory, institutional and territorial conditions, - assess the social, economic and other resources available among different groups of primary producers, - relate conditions and resources to the (adaptation) strategies pursued (e.g. regarding the management of the chain and risks), and - explore the (potential) impacts of the resulting (or expected) changes on social, economic and environmental performances. The analysis aims at capturing the interrelationships between external and internal conditions, (adaptation) strategies and (sustainability) performance. A first important step in the analysis is to express conditions, strategies and... |
